Falco – the dog who changed the history of aviation in Poland – retires

05.09.2025

After 13 years of service, our exceptional employee, a Border Collie named Falco, is finishing his work at Łódź Airport today. It was here, at our airport, that we were the first in Poland to introduce the method of using Border Collies to scare away birds – alongside the traditional falconry method.

Falco arrived in 2012 as a small black fluff ball. Under the watchful eye of falconer Andrzej Fijałkowski, he underwent training and quickly proved that dogs can effectively protect runways. Throughout all his years of work, he never once ran onto the runway – and his intuition, speed, and endurance minimized the risk of aircraft-bird collisions.

Although his work was invisible to passengers, it was crucial for the safety of travelers, crews, and aircraft. Falco knew how to drive birds away, but also how to guide them to safe places – making him an irreplaceable member of our team.

Today we thank him for his years of loyal service. There were gifts, treats, a photo session, and lots of affection from the entire team. Falco will remain at home with Mr. Andrzej, while his already trained successor – a female dog named Falcia – will take over his duties.

Falco, thank you!
For your wisdom, patience, and care for the safety of everyone flying from our airport. You have earned a peaceful, happy retirement – full of play and treats.
